#WomenOfAce: Meet Karen Johnson

Karen Johnson has created natural skin and body care products (handmade in Mission, British Columbia we might add) so you can be confident about what you put in and on your body. Karen is determined to make a positive impact and is doing so by paving her own path - the “rules” aren’t tailored to every individual, at the end of the day, just do what works for you.

ACE: WHAT ARE YOU UP TO? ( YOUR CURRENT HUSTLE )

Karen: I own K’pure Naturals. We formulate natural body, baby and skincare products. I started the business in my home, but we now run everything out of the K’pure studio where I have the most amazing team who help with production and shipping.

ACE: WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU? ( WHERE DID THIS PASSION COME FROM? )

Karen: The business originally began when I made a homemade deodorant to rid my body of toxins, as high levels of aluminum and parabens were found to be leeching into my breastmilk from the toxic store-bought products I was using. That turned into making products for the ladies at the gym I owned at the time, which then turned into K’pure. The passion has always been about keeping my body and my family toxin-free, and now educating others on how they can do the same.

ACE: WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM JOB GROWING UP? HOW DO YOU THINK THIS HAS INFLUENCED WHO YOU ARE TODAY?

Karen: I was calling myself an entrepreneur long before I ever became one. I’ve done everything from hairdressing, waitressing, selling insurance, making baby hats, personal training…you name it, I’ve done it. And every job or business I’ve had, even if I hated it, has turned me into the business woman I am today.

ACE:  IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONLY THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

Karen: Strong. Stubborn. Determined.

ACE: WHO’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION AND WHY?

Karen: It might sound cheesy or cliché, but my kids are always my biggest inspiration. They are the reason I bust my butt and they are my #1 why. They keep me grounded and motivated to do great things every day.

ACE: WHAT DOES THE TERM “BOSS BABE” MEAN TO YOU?

Karen: To be honest, I just prefer “boss.”

ACE: HOW DO YOU EMPOWER OTHER WOMEN?

Karen: I’m not sure that I do, but I hope I do! I try to keep things real on social media and show a lot of behind the scenes with work and home life. I try to keep things positive and motivating so I hope that helps someone on their journey.

ACE: WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED FROM ANOTHER WOMAN?

Karen: “Do what works for you and your family.” I think that translates to business too. There are so many “rules” with raising a family and running a business, but when faced with a problem or decision, instead of doing what everyone is doing, I ask myself what is best for my family and/or business.

ACE: CAN YOU SHARE THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED FROM A FAILURE?

Karen: I think that it’s always better to have taken the chance and failed, than to never have tried at all. There usually isn’t a lesson without the failure, so taking the risk is usually the right choice in the long run.

ACE: WHEN YOU ARE FEELING OVERWHELMED, WHAT DO YOU DO TO FIND PEACE?

Karen: I always have the least anxiety and the best ideas when I run at least three times a week outdoors.

ACE: WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR?

Karen: I hope that people remember me for the way I made them feel, and the positive impact myself or my business has had on them.

ACE: WHERE CAN WE FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOU SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO SUPPORT YOU?

Karen: You can check out my website here.
