“There is nothing better than seeing the genuine smile on someone’s face after I have just created magic on their hair.”

ACE: What are you up to? ( Your current hustle )

Kaitlyn: I own and manage a full service mobile hair business called Hair on Location. Our mission is to support stay at home moms, busy professionals, young trendy women and anyone looking to lounge at home and enjoy a glass of wine while getting pampered. We are all about convenience. As of right now we have a team of 6 amazing stylists, covering the entire city of Calgary. I am currently hustling away to expand our business to Edmonton.

ACE: Why is this important to you? ( Where did this passion come from? )

Kaitlyn: This business is extremely important to me because it forces me to grow and fuels my passion every single day. I take great pleasure and gratification knowing that the service I provide is convenient and comfortable for all clients to enjoy in their home sweet homes. I’ve always had a passion for hair; it’s something that has been a creative outlet for me. My love for hair began when I was a little girl in my glory with a pair of kitchen scissors and my younger cousin who trusted me to cut her bangs, oops.

ACE: What was your dream job growing up? How do you think this has influenced who you are today?

Kaitlyn: My dream job was always to be a hairstylist (I have my kindergarten year book bio to prove it.)  I believe that whatever you love doing and whatever you are passionate about should be what you choose as a career; since we spend half of our lives working we might as well enjoy what we do. This has influenced who I am today because I stuck with my dream job, and I have followed my passion and made a business out of it.

ACE: What’s one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

Kaitlyn: Save, save, save. I remember being 20 and wanting to have all brand-name clothes, and to spend my money on accessories and things that were not important. Now looking back I wish I would have saved all of that money for something more important like a house or more money to start my business, because at the end of the day brand-name clothing didn’t get me anywhere.

ACE: If you could describe yourself in only three words, what would they be?

Kaitlyn: Spontaneous. Hustler. Outgoing.

ACE: Who’s your biggest inspiration and why?

Kaitlyn: This may be cliché, but my family is my biggest inspiration. They inspire me every day to grow, learn, and to work hard to get us the life we have always wanted.

ACE: How do you empower other women?

Kaitlyn: I believe I empower other women by making them stand tall and feel confident about themselves. As a hair stylist I am always giving women makeover’s that they never knew would change how good they feel in their skin. There is nothing better than seeing the genuine smile on someone’s face after I have just created magic on their hair. One of my favourite quotes is “look good, feel good” so as long as I can do my best to make women look good, I know they will feel good.

ACE: What is the best advice you’ve ever received from another woman?

The best advice I have ever received from another woman (my Grandma) is to set boundaries and stick with them. Don’t over work yourself and always have balance in your life. This advice has saved my butt a few times and I would strongly recommend taking Grandmas advice to everyone else.

ACE: Can you share the biggest lesson you’ve learned from a failure?

Kaitlyn: The biggest lesson I have learned thus far through failure relates back to the previous question. When I first started my business I was working 7 days a week, 12-16 hours a day and got so obsessed with working that it completely consumed me and my life. I was never “in the moment” when talking to my husband or family because I was always thinking about the business. I had zero work/ life balance and I was crossing my boundaries every single day. I had failed my friends, my family and myself. I was exhausted and miserable and figured that this is just how it was going to be now that I was a business owner and I needed to accept it. Boy was I wrong.  It’s amazing how important it is to be in the moment, have balance and to take time for yourself and your loved ones. Without these things you have nothing and although your business may be successful, you are not succeeding as a person.

ACE: When you are feeling overwhelmed, what do you do to find peace?

Kaitlyn: Whenever I have hit my limits and am feeling overwhelmed I take a day to myself. During this time I try my best to unwind and relax. Hot baths, naps, long walks and quality time with my daughter. I make sure not to use this day for running errands or doing chores, simply just for myself.  I go to bed early and wake up refreshed the next day.

ACE: What legacy do you hope to be remembered for?

Kaitlyn: If I could be remembered for giving my all to everything I am passionate about in life, being positive and loving deeply, I am happy.

ACE: Where can we find out more about you so we can continue to support you?
